The Seasons

The best time for a Yangtze river cruise is spring or autumn. The region is hot and humid in summer and cool and grey in winter, and the river itself changes through the year as the Three Gorges reservoir is lowered and raised.

Spring (April–May)Mild, green, some rainA popular time; book early

Autumn (September–November)Warm to mild, often clearerPeak season; reservoir raised

Water Levels and the Reservoir

Since the dam was completed, the stretch through the gorges has been a long reservoir whose level is managed through the year. It is lowered ahead of the summer flood season to make room for floodwater and raised again from autumn. The change is large enough to alter how high the cliffs appear and, occasionally, where ships can dock.

For travelers, this matters mainly in two ways: boarding points can move in very dry or very wet periods, and side-gorge excursions can be adjusted. Lines manage this routinely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time for a Yangtze river cruise?

April and May, and September through October or early November, generally offer the most comfortable weather and the clearest views of the gorges.

Do water levels change the cruise?

Yes. The reservoir is kept lower in the summer flood season and raised in autumn. Very high or low water can move boarding points or change excursions.

Do Yangtze cruises run in winter?

Some ships operate in winter with fewer departures; it is cool and quiet, and views can be clear on dry days.

Holidays and Crowds

China’s national holidays, especially the first week of October, bring busy sites and full domestic travel. International ships still sail, but shore visits are more crowded; consider dates either side. Spring also has a holiday cluster around early May. Whatever the month, pack for rain: the gorges make their own weather, and a damp, misty morning can give way to bright sun by lunchtime, which is part of the scenery’s appeal. For broader planning, including insurance (see Cruise & Travel Insurance) and health and safety on Asian rivers (see River Cruising Is Safe), our cruise advisors will advise.

Month-by-Month Notes

  • March: departures pick up; cool and sometimes misty.
  • April–May: green slopes and comfortable days; busy, so book early.
  • June–August: hottest and wettest; carry water and sun protection on excursions.
  • September–October: settled weather and some of the clearest views; avoid China’s October holiday week if you can.
  • November: quieter and cooler, often still pleasant.
  • December–February: cold and damp; fewer departures.
