The Three Gorges Cruise, Gorge by Gorge
What you will see in Qutang, Wu and Xiling — and in the narrow side gorges.

Downstream from Fengjie, a Three Gorges cruise enters Qutang Gorge through Kuimen, a narrow gateway between high cliffs that has long been one of China’s most painted and photographed river scenes. Qutang is the shortest of the three gorges, and ships pass through it quickly, so be on deck early. Near its western entrance stands White Emperor City, a hilltop temple complex visited on many itineraries.
Wu Gorge
Wu Gorge is longer and gentler, with forested slopes and a line of peaks along the river. The best known is Goddess Peak, a rock pillar tied to a local legend. Many ships pause the cruise here for an excursion into a side gorge.
Xiling Gorge
Xiling is the longest gorge and the last before the dam. Historically it held the most dangerous rapids on the river; the dam and reservoir have tamed them. Downstream ships often pass much of Xiling in the evening or overnight before docking above the dam, while upstream ships usually sail it in daylight soon after leaving the dam area — one of the better arguments for going upstream.
The Side Gorges
The highlight for many guests is a few hours in a narrow tributary on a smaller boat: Shennong Stream, Shennv Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges, depending on the ship. The walls close in, the water turns green and the villages along the banks feel far from the main river.
- Wear shoes with grip; landings can be steep and wet.
- Bring a light rain jacket; tributary trips run in most weather.
- Expect steps to and from the boats; ask about the walking if you have limited mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the most beautiful of the Three Gorges?
Opinions differ. Qutang is the shortest and most dramatic at its entrance; Wu Gorge is admired for its peaks and their legends; Xiling is the longest and is closest to the dam.
How much of a Three Gorges cruise is spent in the gorges?
The main gorges are passed during daylight on one or two days of the cruise; the rest of the time is spent on the wider river and on shore visits.
What are the side gorges?
Narrow tributary valleys too small for the cruise ships, visited on smaller boats. Itineraries name them Shennong Stream, Shennv Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges, depending on the ship.
Watching From the Ship
Gorge passages are usually announced, with commentary from the cruise director. The bow and the top deck give the widest views; a balcony cabin lets you watch in comfort. On a Three Gorges cruise downstream, Qutang and Wu are typically passed on the same day; upstream, the order reverses and Xiling comes first, on the day you leave the dam area. For how direction changes what you see, read upstream or downstream.
