Upstream or Downstream on the Yangtze?
The same river, the same gorges — but two different trips.

Every Yangtze river cruise on the classic route has to choose a direction, and it matters more than many travelers expect. Sailing with the current is faster; against it, the ship needs an extra night.
| Downstream | Upstream | |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Chongqing to the dam area and Yichang | Yichang and the dam area to Chongqing |
| Usual length | 4 days, 3 nights | 5 days, 4 nights |
| Dam visit | On the last morning | On the first full day |
| Gorges | Qutang and Wu by day; Xiling often late or overnight | Xiling by day first, then Wu and Qutang |
| Pace | Brisk; a full program each day | More relaxed, with more time on board |
| Ends in | Yichang, for flights or trains onward | Chongqing, a major air hub |
Round trips of about a week from Chongqing are also sold by some ships, covering the route in both directions.
How to Decide
- Short on time: downstream.
- Want to unwind: upstream, with an extra day aboard.
- Connections: Chongqing has more flights than Yichang, which can favor ending upstream there.
- China tour shape: coming from Xi’an or Chengdu, start in Chongqing; coming from Shanghai or Beijing, either works.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to sail the Yangtze upstream or downstream?
Downstream is shorter (usually three nights) and fits a tight schedule. Upstream (usually four nights) is more relaxed and gives an extra day aboard. The main sights are the same.
Does direction change which sights I see in daylight?
It can. Qutang and Wu are passed by day in both directions, but downstream ships may pass much of Xiling Gorge in the evening or overnight, while upstream ships usually see it in daylight.
Can I do a round trip?
Some ships offer round trips of about a week from Chongqing, covering the route in both directions.
Fitting the Cruise Into a China Trip
A common shape is Beijing, then Xi’an, a flight to Chongqing, the downstream cruise, and onward from Yichang to Shanghai. Travelers short on time sometimes reverse it. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can build either version and handle the internal flights and trains. Which Is Better Value?
Upstream cruises carry an extra night, so they cost more in total but often less per night, and they leave room for one more shore visit or simply a slower day. Downstream trips save a day for the rest of the tour. Weigh the extra night against what else that day could buy you in Beijing, Xi’an or Shanghai; for many travelers on a tight schedule, downstream wins, while those who want the cruise as the centerpiece choose upstream.
